All About Alex - Our Referral Story

I'll never forget the day we received our referral. I had a short break at work to check my email and phone messages and noticed that our social worker had both called and emailed asking me to get back to her ASAP. I knew it had to be one of two things: something went wrong with our USCIS application or we had a referral. Not wanting to cause a scene in front of my co-workers, I instant-messaged Ryan telling him to call our social worker right away. I sat in suspense as he gave me updates which seemed to take FOR-EV-ER (phone ringing... pause... pause... pause... it's a referral - AHHHH!!!!). I immediately scooped up my things and got out of Dodge. There way no way I could even think about anything else! I had to be home.

Anyway, we didn't actually get the referral that day. They gave us some information about the baby and told us to call them back the next day if we wanted to see the referral. So we called them back the next day and told them we wanted to see the referral (every step must involve waiting, you see). This was a tough day because I actually had to be at a training for work. Ryan got the referral and texted me all day about him. I WAS GOING NUTS! I don't remember one thing I was trained on that day. However, I do remember taking out my phone to look at his picture just one more time.

So, as you have probably guessed, we accepted the referral of this lovely baby boy. We decided to name him Alex, keeping his Korean name as his middle name. Here are a few fun facts we know about Alex:

  • He was born on March 18, 2010 (and shares a birthday with our wonderful sister-in-law, Corrie!)
  • At birth, he weighed 6 pounds, 5 ounces
  • He's a good sleeper (just like me!)
  • He makes eye-contact and babbles a lot (cute!)
  • He's starting to crawl (awww, so sad to be missing that!)
  • He's living with a loving foster family near Seoul, the capital city

I can't wait to meet him!!!
